I am suuuuuuuuper backlogged on blogging about my recent makes😵‍💫 but today is Key’s Day and I wanted to share the shirt I made my sweet girl for her 2nd day of school! It was inspired by this shirt that SHINee's Key wore for a promotional donut promo they did with Old Ferry Donut for their recent comeback!

This past year has been a lot… I took on a lot and so many personal things went on as well, and I just didn’t get to finish some outfits on time, or take pictures, or edit them, etc. to the point where I have tons of content that is just piling up, waiting to be shared! It might come out out of order, but I still can’t wait to share all of it here!!

The Cheyenne Shirt Remix

I almost always, always always use Adrianna’s Laramie Shirt PDF Pattern for my go-to button down, but as my girls outgrow it, I’ve been switching to the Cheyenne Shirt which is the same but in women’s sizing. I also recently bought the Granville button-down shirt PDF pattern by Sewaholic but I still prefer the detail work and definitely the way Adrianna articulates her tutorials. I like lots of descriptions and lots of pictures. When I make my patterns, I like there to be no question as to how a particular part goes together and strive to make the tutorial very detailed.

I made the shirt in an XS and took the sleeves up to a short sleeve length… about 7.5” in length plus 3cm for the hem allowance (idk about any of you that also design patterns, but my brain is constantly working in both metric and imperial measurements so I frequently mix the two in conversation, hoping other sewing peeps will get what I mean😅or I’m just a mess and I stand alone on this one!). I like the Cheyenne Shirt pattern more than the Laramie Shirt because it doesn’t have a gather in the back bodice and sometimes I’m just too lazy/rushed to take the time to factor in taking out the gather amount. Really other than that the patterns seem to be identical other than sizing.

Since I wanted it to be a work shirt style and not a proper button-down, I did not use a collar stand. It just so happened that the button placket edits I made were the perfect length for the collar, so I didn’t have to edit that at all. I did add about 3cm to the bodice front plus a 3cm facing for a semi-built-in/ contrast placket look because I wanted to add a pop more of the pink than the original. The only other thing that I changed was the style of the pockets. I used the flap from the Granville and reshaped it and lengthened it to look like Key’s and did the same shaping on the pocket itself, adding in a button to keep it shut like his.

The decals were interesting… I used a puff heat transfer vinyl and traced out the decals to make my own details. I never got a shot of the back of Key’s shirt, but I thought it would be more fun to add the big logo to the back! The vinyl transferred very well (or so I thought until I washed it and it all came up🥲. I followed the instructions to use cold water and delicate cycle and then low temp tumble dry but it all peeled up except for the black backing and most of the front lettering. In the future, I’m planning on hand wash/delicate cycle cold water and then just line drying. I did completely remake the decals because we love the shirt so much!) and was easy to weed. I love the look of the puffiness, but am hoping the results are longer-lasting in the future.

The Photoshoot at Voodoo Doughnuts

Elephant in the room is that there is no way for us international shawols (fans) to try the adorable SHINee Old Ferry donut unless we travel to Seoul to get one. SOOooo, we did what we could locally and went to Voodoo Doughnuts! They’re known for their wacky doughnuts and I felt that this was a perfect match for this photoshoot! We’ve taken photos here before, but we don’t always get doughnuts here (we’re more Blue Star doughnut fans! But these were more delicious than we had remembered that I think we’ll be getting them more often in the future!)

They added tables in front of the big mural which made taking pictures a little more cumbersome, but we all had fun anyways! We all got to try each other’s doughnuts and it was a quick and happy photoshoot!

Speaking of elephants, there was an old vintage pink elephant ride out front that Akira was super excited about! We put a quarter in the ride, thinking it probably wouldn’t do anything and it just jolted into furious action and it was so funny and surprising!

So that’s that for the Old Ferry Donut Shirt! You may be wondering why it was a second day of school shirt and that’s because on the first day of school, she wore her birthday outfit, which I’ll be sharing really soon!!! Until then, Happy Birthday Key and Happy Birthday to my big sis Aleksa!!!🥰
